Was I familiar with Lorde? Only that song “Royals” that nobody could escape ten years ago.
Had I heard Pure Heroine before? Nope. Only that song “Royals” that nobody could escape ten years ago.
Thoughts on Pure Heroine: I’m trying not to research for this Apple Music 100 project because I want to be as ignorant as possible when commenting on something like Pure Heroine. I never really considered listening to it until it came up on this list. If I learn too much about Lorde it could influence my original thoughts and that’s not what I’m going for. Here’s what I kept thinking while listening to this album: I’ve become a big fan of Billie Eilish over the past couple years (thanks to my daughter, Lucy). I think she’s wildly creative and talented. Pure Heroine strikes me as something that could’ve inspired a young Billie Eilish 11 years ago. Good left-of-center pop music. I’m sure there’s no shortage of artists like Lorde, but my recollection of her is that she stood out as a quirky alternative to the Katy Perrys of the early-2010s. I’m by no means blown away by this album, but I enjoyed it.
Favorite track: Nothing jumped out at me as especially good or bad, but if I had to pick give me “Buzzcut Season“.
Will I listen to Pure Heroine again? I won’t seek it out, but I wouldn’t object to it if someone else was playing it.
Would I buy it on vinyl? No. I tend to favor vinyl with a laid back vibe like this, but it didn’t do enough for me to want to spend extra money on it.
